Did someone lose a domesticated skunk?
« on: June 06, 2010, 10:23:34 AM »
I've heard that skunks make great pets - something between a cat & a ferret, but more docile than either. That is to say once their highly-accurate anal "sacks" are removed, otherwise there is surely hell to pay.

I first saw this little guy early last week on a walk around the neighborhood - I take one every evening, 1.5 miles in about 20 minutes. I remember this day in particular because I rarely walk it alone. Remember that scene in the new Star Trek where Kirk climbs from the pod he was ejected out of the Enterprise onto the sixth planet of the Hoth system? He starts walking to the outpost and something catches his eye so he turns around and tries to make out what it is he saw? Then they zoom into this running, screaming beast? Yeah, it was like that for me, but mostly because these things move so foreign to what I'm used to seeing. And it was broad daylight. Because I'd been playing hours and hours of "Serious Sam" I was already on edge because of the stampeding buffalo, so I ran from it. Like a little girl I ran.

I hear those those things can hit a fly on a fence-post at 15-feet.

Yesterday, that little guy showed up in my backyard. This time, he didn't seem so ferocious. There's been talk around the neighborhood that it might be recently abandoned domesticated skunk. The only issue I have with that is how the hell you'd find out? Sure it looks soft and cuddly now, but I'm not going to approach it to find out if it sprays or not!

Here's the little guy:

We have one that comes between our house and the neighbors to eat bugs that are attracted to her spotlight.  It looks very playful and cuddly, and it isn't afraid of people, but let me assure you, it CAN make a stink.  I would bet they are just getting used to humans and have become less skittish around us.
I am sarcastic and have a smart ass attitude.  It's a natural defense against drama, bullshit, and stupidity...

E - just touch the butt and see if the sacs are still there.  Simple.

This was my first thought ... "But if you see one during the day, that’s very suspect,” and is an indicator the animal might be sick." http://courier-gazette.com/articles/2010/06/09/news_update/214.txt

NEVER approach a skunk during the day. 9 times out of 10 they are rabid. If you see one during the day, you should call animal control. When I lived in Sherman, I saw several skunks during the day. I called animal control and they came out ASAP. Turns out the three I reported were all rabid. My son was bitten and scratched by a stray cat when we first moved here. We called animal control and they came out to try and trap it to put it under quarantine. Collin county health department called me and told me to take my son to the doctor immediately and get him started on the rabies vaccine since we couldn't catch the cat. Unfortunately my health insurance would not cover the cost of vaccine. It was VERY expensive. They paid for the shots to be administered though. Go figure.

Good to know.  What a nightmare for you and your little boy.

Yep during the day means sick hence the slow cuddle appearance, this was one of my early Anna lessons. When I first moved here I heard several shots fired across the street from me. Being a city girl gun shots were not on my list of things to stick around for. Anyway I didn't even take the baby out of the play pen, I just picked the damn thing up baby and all tossed it in the back closet til I knew what was up. Saw 3 very proud of themselves guys come from behind neighbors house...lesson learned and now they tell me when it's huntin' season.

That reminds me!  I saw that dude that lives in your house slummin' around the 1st floor last week.  Its been so long since I'd seen him took my recognition algorithm a full five-seconds to pull his record from my facial database.

Ugh, I'm getting old.

Never, ever, approach a skunk.  Skunks are largely nocturnal, and if you see one during the day it is probably old-sick or rabid-sick.  Call animal control.  Please.  Or I might see you in my ER all stinky and needing rabies shots....

I was golfing with my Dad a few years ago in the Chicago area and he was freaking out when we saw a skunk near a fairway.  I made fun of him.  Now I know he was wise beyond my years!
