Building Permit?
« on: October 07, 2007, 06:45:43 PM »
Would I need to apply for a building permit if my husband is going to build a covered porch in our backyard?

We wouldn't...just work real quick on the weekends and have a big crew to help.  Permits = Nazism

You would be one of few who have actually paid for one.

I know. I have several neighbors that have built covered patios. All of them without a building permit.

I know this topic is old..   We talked to several contractors about a patio cover...some say yes, you need to get one...and some say not to worry about it.  Just to go get one if the building inspector happens to drop in and ask to see it...Just play stupid and act like you didn't know you needed one?  If you get a permit they can raisie your property tax and who wants that ???

we got one because our contractor suggested it.  I didn't know we had a "choice"  It was $50 bucks, but at least I don't need to worry about it.  We did have to get an OK from our HOA though

Who did ya'lls patio cover?  We have bids ranging from $2200 - $5000 for the same exact patio that I want.  I'll have to get out my HOA rules book.  I thought that no approval is needed if it's not visible from the road???

Wow, what sq ft are you trying to cover. We have almost 100 sq ft we are trying to cover, thinking we may do it ourselves and take a year to do it LOL

Do you have a link on the company/type of covering you are doing?

Our neighbor across the street had hers done by her daughters father in law and we contacted him.  He builds it with pressure treated wood and then in cases it in cedar.  If you have gutters, he removes them and attaches them to the cover.  We are paying $2300 for 10X15.  The roof will be shingled and the inside of the roof (the part we see) is painted bead board.  It is attached to the house, so thats why we had to get permission from HOA.  He should be finishing it this week :)

Hey Scout...We are wanting a patio cover 12 x 22 hip style roof with cedar post and the rest treated wood...Lowest bid was from a guy over in Westminister that I found on Craigslist and the highest bid was from a very well known reputable builder in this area and I know he would do a fantastic job...but really, out of our league price wise.  We don't want it attached because that could possibly void our homeowners warranty..but it will look attached since post will be butted up against the home and shingled to flow with the rest of the house.  I'm still looking to find the right person to do this job for us. I've pleaded and begged with my hubby to tackle this project...but he won't budge on it...So, I'm taking matter into my own hands and getting it done myself!...I'll just toss the bill his way and be done with it..LOL
