Chamber of Commerce
« on: September 28, 2007, 11:35:32 PM »
I know the city has to start somewhere, but I am ashamed of our Chamber of Commerce website.  While I applaud the attempt at technology use and forward-thinking, I am distressed that the page sports a third party ad-banner across the top and looks, in general, unprofessional.  The purple does not say "Come to Anna."

As examples, in the current advertisement for the circus that will soon start performing, note the obvious lack of the circus' name and a mis-spelled word:

Quote
$ 6.00 NOW - $7.00  at the gate
$ 8.00 NOW - $11.00 at the gate
Buying now till Sunday Septemeber 30th saves you money!!!   214-243-7455 - info

Also, doesn't the wording seem a little unclear?  How can the tickets cost both $6 NOW and $8 NOW?   I mean we all get the gist, but it could have been written much more clearly.  Is THAT job open??  I LOVE writing!  When the city council forms a writing committee, put me on it.

The chamber of commerce is not a function of the city.  The Chamber of Commerce is made up of business owners.  The business owners pay a dues to be "members".  The chamber of commerce is a way to promote business in Anna.  The chamber is a way for businesses to network.   The chamber gives referrals to residents  - but typically they only refer to members that are members.

Because the Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to only the businesses which are members, one could say that the Chamber of Commerce hurts business in Anna, by ignoring those which are not members.

Sure - but there are those who say the same thing about this site.  If its not endorsed by the city, they shouldn't take the blame.

I'm not blaming the city.   I'm blaming the people who put it up.

Well, here is an explanation for the slapdash look of the site:

They bought a package with GoDaddy (hosting + domain) which isn't a bad thing. I pretty much did the same thing for the blog.
But, instead of hiring someone to design the site, they threw something together using an application on GoDaddy called Website Tonight.
It gives you a framework, or something temporary. I don't think it's meant to be up this long.
I mean, you could do a better job with Front Page templates.

I know the city has to start somewhere, but I am ashamed of our Chamber of Commerce website.

As Glodowg mentions later, the chamber isn't run by the city.  If the work needs to be done on the site, that's got to go through the chamber.
When the city council forms a writing committee, put me on it.

Each of the boards has a secretary position...you may consider running for a board then volunteering for that.  Or you can sign up as a member of the Chamber of Commerce.  You can probably work out something with them to allow you to work on the web page.  I'd be interested to know what response you get to a request like that...

Hell, I could do a better job just hand-coding in HTML.

Notepad used to be my favorite web page editor, until I mended my ways and switched to Vim.

This is why I love you like a brother.

Of course I still try to use vi commands in Notepad when I'm on XP.  Gah!

I still hit ESC :wq in most of my edit sessions.  You'll see it in some of the Powerpoint presentations I've given.  I still try to do it when editing these forum posts.

And no matter how hard I try, I can't tab complete my username and password.

There will be many changes from the Chamber very soon and the web site is one of the first.
