Higher Property Tax For Anna Homeowners

The City of Anna ADOPTED A TAX RATE THAT WILL RAISE MORE TAXES FOR MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS THAN LAST YEAR'S TAX RATE.

THE TAX RATE WILL RAISE TAXES FOR MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS ON A $100,000 HOME BY APPROXIMATELY $28.18.

Blame previous councils for poor planning.  Taxes were decreased during periods of high growth, limiting the amount of infrastructure improvements that could be made during those times.  Instead of funding the debt, building the necessary water and sewer lines, and improving the streets in the older parts of the city, they dropped the tax rate and subsequently the ball on their jobs.

Hell, he has to have a disclaimer!   Those assholes over at the now-defunct forum tried to have Councilman hog-tied for being on there!

I figured as much although I'm not privy to the details of those events as I was (gasp!) offline!

I think the money just needs to be managed better (smarter)...With the city collecting off all the new homeowners...I don't see why there is not enough for the park, city roads etc...Anyone know how many new families moved to Anna this past year?...Just curious  :-\

From the last city meeting I attended, it sounded like quite a few less then they had budgeted for.

The housing market tanked, along with the mortgage business, ergo fewer people are qualifying for loans. Or even being able to keep up the payments of their home.

Who really knows. Maybe there needs to be a city accountant or something.

According to Collin Cad the tax was 52.5 per $100 Anna raised it to 57.5 per $100 which is still pretty low compared to other cities in the county. From what I understand the city was operating off new building permit money. Now that building has slowed down quite a bit, their new income is drying up. The flip side of this is Anna ISD tax went down from $1.77 to $1.48 so at least this makes up for it.

If my calendar serves me correctly, 14 September 2007.  The new rate is $0.575 per $100 valuation of property.

Do you have any idea how high they'd be right now if it weren't for Alcohol Tax Revenue?

MMMM...i thought the alcohol sales were gona keep property taxes down?

They did, and in the 2 years of extremely high growth, the tax rate was dropped by $0.080297

2007 - 0.575000 (Adopted 14 Sep 07)
2006 - 0.525000
2005 - 0.525000
2004 - 0.499703
2003 - 0.499703
2002 - 0.580000
2001 - 0.580000
2000 - 0.529900

Previous councils were banking on the development to keep the city afloat, and it did.  Now that the development has dropped off, rates have to go up again.

Also note that this is the city tax rate.  The school tax rate is about 3x what's shown.  This information can be found from the Collin County Central Appraisal District

MMMM...i thought the alcohol sales were gona keep property taxes down?

I think the current estimates for sales tax revenue from alcohol sales is 35% - 36% of the total sales tax.  I haven't done extensive research on this yet, and don't have the budget in front of me, so can't give an accurate number.  But it is within 1 order of magnitude of the 35% - 36% number.

Each $0.01 increase in city tax brings in approximately $35k in revenue.  Once I get some more numbers in front of me, I can give a better idea.
