STOP THE ANNEXATION
« on: December 08, 2010, 10:22:03 AM »
Just some thoughts:

1) This is not an exercise of eminent domain, and nobody is taking your property, so don't use the term "land grab"

2) I estimate that there are 100 people affected by the proposed annexations.  They all currently live in the city's extraterritorial jurisdiction along roads that are or will soon be major thoroughfares in our city.

3) "Fewer property rights" in this sense means that they would have to adhere to zoning regulations.  So yeah, the idea is to prevent someone building a junk yard or an oil refinery adjacent to a shopping center along 75.

4) "Higher taxes" means that these 100 people could be subject to the city property tax along with the county, CCCCD, and AISD taxes they already pay.  The next time you dial 911 and Anna PD responds to your call, tell them that you're opposed to Annexation and that you'll just wait for the Sheriff's Dept. I guess if you needed fire or ambulance service you'd be SOL.

5) How many years worth of property tax would you have to avoid to recoup the cost of mailing this to every house in Anna?

6) Most of the affected households have an ag-exemption on their property taxes anyway.

7) Look on the bright side: once you're annexed, you can vote or run for city offices so you won't have to mislead and scare people who are already citizens of Anna to do your dirty work for you!

In the event of a change from agricultural use to non-ag use there is a "roll-back" tax requiring payment of the last 5 years taxes as if it were non-ag.  I propose, in the event of a forced-annexation, there be a "roll-forward" tax that exempts the land owner from paying city taxes for the next 5 years.

"roll forward" sounds like a good idea to take the "sting" outta annexation

since it's a good idea it'll never happen, though

The people who are on the annexation list see it from another point of view.  And, they have valid reasons for not wanting to be annexed.

Annexation does mean more tax money for the city and it also means that city services would have to be extened to those annexed into the city.

It might also mean that the city could qualify for some types of grants with this growth demand?

What reasons does the city have for attempting an annexation. that are not being disclosed?  Are they trying to stop a MUD from going in?  Do they want to change the zoning of these annexed areas?  Is there a developer that wants this to be done?  Would this allow the city to increase its spending; thus making increased debt?

What about the cost of sewer and water extensions that might be involved.
Would the annexed people have to pay out of pocket for some of these expenses?  It would add voters for election issues.  But, what would the hidden costs to the tax payers be?

Check it out from both points of veiw; including the city government reasons.

With this downturn in the economy does it really make sense to do an annexation at this time.  If so, WHY?????

STOP THE MADNESS!  When that postcard showed up in my mailbox, the only thought I had was to call all the names listed and say "ANNEX AWAY!"

Personally, I find it a waste of money and energy to send those cards to what seems to be everyone.  I found the post card amusing all the way to the trashcan.

I put mine in the recycle bag, after first checking it for typos. But, that's just who I am.

I was under the impression that since the city had a water department there would be no need for a MUD?

I heard you live in Kentucky now, so if that is true why aren't you looking for aliens there? Why do you even care?
