TAXES!! HERE WE GO AGAIN!
« on: September 08, 2011, 12:47:30 PM »
Wow raising taxes in the middle of a recession! Is anybody here not paying enough taxes? Now it is debate time for the Council to set tax rate. So about half of them haven't got a clue and they will raise our stinking tax rate not because of budgetary woes but because our firemen need showers or some other horse $hit excuse!

I do not know about "you" but we have had to cut back because of this economy. So what gives? Why more money?
This Tuesday 13th. @ 19:30 Show up any let some of the wienies know that you want them to tax you at a higher rate!!!!

BTW.

If you answered no to the first question, how big of an extra check did you mail out IRS or any of the others.

It looked like they were keeping the tax rate the same.  Did I read the proposed budget incorrectly?  Or has something changed since the proposed budget was posted?

Citation:  http://annatexas.gov/DocumentView.aspx?DID=375

Quote
In spite of the loss of over $10 million in value to existing properties, this proposed budget can be funded by adopting a tax rate of $0.650332 cents per $100 valuation which is identical to the tax rate adopted last year. The effective tax rate which is a calculated rate that would provide the City with about the same amount of revenue it received last year on properties taxed in both years is $0.669035. By adopting the same tax rate as last year, property taxes due on the average residential homestead will decline by $20.39. Of the total tax rate, 0.559368 cents is dedicated to general fund maintenance and operations.

This is the other side of the same coin we've been discussing with regards to increasing the FD budget.

People are keen to speak out for hiring more firemen or against raising taxes, but nobody comes prepared with suggestions and justifications for what expenses to cut in exchange for what they're seeking.

All things considered, there's not a whole lot in the budget that jumps out as being easily discarded waste.  We can't have it all - and we can't have it for free.

If we're in a recession, and they keep the tax rate the same, isn't that the same as an increase?

depends on the assessed values

which are dropping like very heavy rocks

didn't yours go down to 89 or some such?

You are taxed on the Total Assessed value of your property not just the Improved Homesite value. E's 89K did not include the value of his land. Sorry E, CCAD is a favorite time waste for me, had to check it out when you said your house had been appraised at 89. Not wanting to sell anytime soon, I was going to jump on that number. His actual Taxable Assessment in 125.5, which is still way down from 2010 147. All of this is public record. I miss the days of floorplans on DCAD and CCAD   :o

Back to making sure my neighbors aren't paying less than me  8)

Ugh looks like a call is in order. While others dropped, mine increased. Sure dont want to pay 6.5******% on that 4K Ha!

The answer to E's question is no if your property values go down.

The problem is when municipalities increase tax rates to keep revenue the same as previous years.  It's about as dirty as it gets.  Especially when snuck in at a level just below the threshold that requires a public vote.  Our cute little Anna has done that to us multiple times.

You guys are citing a "proposed budget" which means changes can be made....might want to take a second gander @ his call to action.

sometimes you need to listen closely in a small town...just sayin'

Very good!  I also requested that lower amount and was sore surprised when they gave it to me.  Then again, I made them an argument difficult to refute.

Coming on here like 'chicken little' and ranting that the sky is falling sounds like an uninformed rant.  If he had posted something like "The proposed tax rate is X but council members A and B want to make it X+$ and there is a debate going on" then maybe I would take him more seriously.  Is there something happening?  Is there another proposal being discussed by the council???  Lets have some facts and not an borderline insane rant.  That would probably get people to show up.   ::)

The history of increased tax rates should at least be a foundation of facts for you.  Don't think it won't happen again.  Back to the well as they say.  Just because the city sends out an email saying it won't happen doesn't mean it won't happen.

How about you deliver facts that it isn't happening?

I will not cite sources! Suffice to say, the budget has been proposed as my good neighbor above stated. The rate has not. The vote, as I understand, is split between the budget and last years rate or "let's just raise it 'cause well some of those S.O.B.'s got a reduction on their tax rates and we need more money". Oh that's right, they did back door us last year too!

Now for some more fun stuff.....

Did I not read a couple of weeks ago, in the "local" paper that one of our city council persons bought a house just up the street? Did it not get hit by a tornado too? I guess Alabama is in the ETJ and his Qualifications are still valid. Also do we not have another member MIA at the council too?
