Voting November 3rd
« on: October 20, 2009, 08:30:10 AM »
ADMIN: if you want, move this to Elections ... I saw Government and thought I was posting to the right spot.

http://public1.co.collin.tx.us/elections/polling_locations/Sample%20Ballot%20Documents/BS1.pdf

Here are my opinions on the surface without a ton of thought.  The purpose of posting is for you to help me understand better and maybe change my vote.

Prop1 - AGAINST
If the military felt they wanted or needed the adjacent land, they would take it thru US Government channels.  This is just an attempt to expand local eminent domain...

Prop2 - FOR
I now support this upon drax0r's research.  My previous interpretation was totally incorrect.  This proposition is part of an overhaul of the Texas property tax code.
AGAINST
No new taxes.  This is a State property tax on top of your city, county, school, college, etc. property taxes.  If they want more money, they should attempt to raise the sales tax rate (thru a vote).  Why build a whole new infrastructure at the state level costing more tax payer money?

Prop3 - FOR
See Prop2
AGAINST
They only need this because of Prop2.  Otherwise the current system works.

Prop4 - AGAINST
More bureaucracy in action.  If you've got the fund, use it.  Don't create a new one and move the money.

Prop5 - FOR
See Prop2
AGAINST
Isn't this more of the same?

Prop6 - AGAINST
Huh?  Authorize them to issue bonds you've already authorized them to issue?

Prop7 - FOR
Absolutely.  Give me a good reason why they shouldn't be allowed to hold office.

Prop8 - FOR
Not much to say here.

Prop9 - AGAINST FOR
Changed my position based on the 'better safe than sorry' philosophy.
Not that it is a 'right', but the state should maintain control of our borders.  However, there is a gray area where coastlines are shifting and encroaching on private property owners.  In these cases, rather than eminent domain, I believe they should get a grandfather clause lease agreement that allows the property owner to keep the property until it is no longer inhabitable.

Prop10 - FOR
Term limits are our friend.

Prop11 - FOR
Prevents city from taking land to build Jerry Jones Stadium.  Make him buy it outright if he wants to build.

As much as I like to argue with Fred -- and I do quite enjoy that -- I find that I agree on all but one of the proposed amendments.

I'm a little unsure on Prop. 9.  I think it'll pass with ease because of the way its worded, but I see some potential for abuse of the proposed authority to trample private property rights.

I'm also unsure that I like the fact that we're so trigger happy with amending the constitution in the first place.  > 450 times already.  I don't know if legislators feel that they've got to make new laws to be seen as 'effective'  but I'd like to pass an amendment that dictates that for each new law passed, 2 old ones must go away.

There's too much confusion.  I can't get no relief.

'Educate voters' is more precise.  Or maybe make voters become educated.  The difference being I don't have to be the one doing the educating.  As long as I stimulate one person to think before they vote, I have achieved my goal.  And in the process, I might become more educated and change my thinking...

Ok - after a little more research, I discovered that this is not what it may seem.

This does not establish or allow to the legislature to establish a state property tax -- this allows the state to pass (which it did, pending constitutional authority) a law that says that appraisal districts may only value a property based on its value as a residence, as opposed to the practice of valuing it based on what it could be worth as a commercial (or other) property given its location.  They can't say your property is worth far more because it'd be a great place to put a Best Buy.

A state property tax is prohibited under Article 8, Section 1-e of the Texas Constitution, and that section is not affected by this proposed amendment.

Governmental conspiracy?  Alien attack?  I wonder will it turn into a situation much like the commercial I saw for a show coming called "V".

"Just don't ask any questions that depict us in an unfavorable way."

Hmmm.  I wonder.

Just had to find something to argue about didn't you. :o)

Thanks for the info.  I'll have to do some research myself.  This makes sense the way you described it.

Here is another thing to consider.

Since you live in Collin County, you can vote at anyone of the 56 Voting Centers in Collin County on election day. You do not have to go to your home precinct.

http://public1.co.collin.tx.us/elections/polling_locations/default.aspx

As an example: For those that take the train to and from work, the Meeting room at the Plano Downtown station is a polling place. You can stop either on your way to work, or your way from work to get your voting done. You do not have to come back to Anna. Just make sure you have your ID and/ or voters registration card. You will get the correct ballot.

Happy Voting!!

Great info.  Now I don't have to rush home to make it to the polls in Anna only to stand in a long line.  I can run out at lunch or something and vote in Plano.  Yeah  8)!

Even better. If you follow the link in the previous post, you will see a column that lists "status". Right now it should be green, but tomorrow that "light" will be tracking how busy and polling station is and the approximate wait time. Anything less then 15 minutes will be green. 16-30 will be yellow. Anything over 30 will be red.

I will be doing my part by working as an alternate election judge in an undisclosed location. If you are ever interested in being a clerk or judge for an election (Primaries are next year) contact either the County Elections office or the local political party of your choice.

Just voted in Richardson.  Several inefficiencies, but definitely more convenient than rushing home after work tonight.

Provided my constructive feedback to the Elections office: election@collincountytx.gov

Prop7 - FOR
Absolutely.  Give me a good reason why they shouldn't be allowed to hold office.

Usually conflict of interest.
