Automaker Bailout-throwing good money after bad
« on: December 11, 2008, 09:59:35 PM »
WASHINGTON – A $14 billion emergency bailout for U.S. automakers collapsed in the Senate Thursday night after the United Auto Workers refused to accede to Republican demands for swift wage cuts.

I don't know about you but I don't think people with no more than a high school education deserve and average of $30 an hour to run a screw gun.  When you factor in all of the entitlement programs that an UAW worker enjoys that hourly rate increases to around $70.

What do you think Anna?

Honestly, if Americans actually purchased and drove American-made cars, I'd so go for it!  Keep the dream alive.  But we don't.  We're a selfish nation of consumers and I don't want to be party to greed.  I rememeber when the U.S. Government bailed out Chrysler in the 80s.  They paid their debt back in a tenth of the time - with interest, and came back with an amazing lineup after their tailspin.  They were highly motivated and made a difference.

I just don't see that today with any of them.

Perfect resonse, E.  I agree whole heartedly.
The difference between then and now, I believe, is that then they were trying to save a company and jobs.  Now they all just want a piece of the "bail out pie".  Where is Mr. Iacocca when you need him?

Apparently he's still writing books.  In one published last year, he wrote:

Quote
Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening? Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder. We've got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, "Stay the course." Stay the course? You've got to be kidding. This is America, not the damned Titanic. I'll give you a sound bite: Throw the bums out!

I agree, however this it what the unions are good at doing. My thoughts about the bailout ? All 3 companies are too large to continue at their present size. There MUST be some closings and layoffs in all 3. There is not enough market demand to run all the factories like they used to. Even if they mass produced electric cars and sales picked up, it takes alot less labor and time to produce them. This "bailout" talk is just a bandaid.
