Meet the Candidate
« on: April 09, 2009, 08:31:32 AM »
Again this election season, the GACC will host "Meet the Candidate" for both City Council and AISD School Board

Monday April 27th
6:30pm
JKB Elementary Cafeteria

This is historically not very well attended and it is the hope of the board that more will come this year so that you can vote informed.  If you have questions you would like posed to the candidates, feel free to PM me and I will pass it on to the staff member that will be compiling that info.

Early voting begins on Monday April 27th and election day is Saturday May 9th.

I would like to know why we have to submit our questions in advance. In a real world scenario the candidates do not get a chance to pick and choose which questions they would like to answer. I would rather not have a scripted response to my question. Who decides what questions are chosen and scraped. Would it not be better to have a town hall meeting type of forum to demonstrate that the candidates can and will think on their feet.

As for the candidates themselves, Do you not think that Darren Driskell should run for Mayor when his wife is the president of the Chamber of Commerce would that not be a conflict of interest..

Thanks.

That is an interesting question you pose.  Why do you think it would be a conflict of interest?

In my thoughts the Chamber and the Council work together to bring businesses to our community and help them thrive.

Describe a situation where there would be a conflict of interest so I can understand.

In a perfect world that is true, But when you have figure heads in the same household pushing the same agenda, you loose the check and balances you would normally have.  What is stopping the mayor from giving preferential treatment to his wife's Chamber of Commerce members? Basically, two people with the same "agenda" with lots of power. The city has partnered with the Chamber so they are not completely separate entities.

The city council I think.  I don't see much merit in the argument for conflict of interest.  I also think the Mayor doesn't have as much power as you think.

The mayor is only a vote, However, he is the "official" representation of the city to potential developers and business owners.  He runs the meetings so he does have some control over how conversations go.

You are correct, Red High Heels.

Cypher - Since two members of the Chamber of Commerce relinquished their board positions due to a conflict of interest with their positions on the Planning and Zoning Commission, I don't see how you can NOT deem the mayor being married to the Chamber of Commerce President as a conflict of interest.

I digress.  Let's move on.

Let's talk about Mr. Driskell making promises to businesses that never come to fruition because of city ordinances and codes that, in all honesty, Mr. Driskell should know about before making those promises.

Let's discuss what exactly Mr. Driskell's plan for our city is, if anyone truly knows.  I have only heard the man speak in circles and never fully answer any questions.

Let's chat about the blind eye that people turn to Mr.Driskell's deeds because he is already in a position of "power" and how he has a braggart attitude towards what he can get away with.

Is Darren Driskell the man for the job?  Does he really have Anna's best interests at heart?  Are we feeding an ego that is already over-inflated?

Wow, though this is a public forum, I'm not sure that this is the place for this type of discussion.

Where would be the appropriate place to voice my questions?  As someone who previously voted for Darren Driskell when he ran for city council, I feel that I have a right to voice my concerns based on what I have personally observed and wish to have my concerns addressed.  I also feel that the voting public have a right to share this knowledge and demand answers, too.
