Questions from an outsider
« on: October 28, 2007, 12:11:07 AM »
Hiya!

This is my first post, I found this site today. because of my interest in the alcohol sales vote.

I don't understand why the alcohol sales are supposed to be so evil. Is it because alcohol is inherently evil?

First of all, Fossil Creek and now the new store, Anna Fine Wine and Spirits, are located next to the highway. The effect on homes is minimal, I don't see any homes near these liquor stores. I would rather live next to a liquor store than a truck stop (although I don't have a problem with truck stops, they just aren't pretty). People buying alcohol aren't cruising through the subdivisions.

I live in McKinney and I am 42, and my husband is 37, neither of us has ever been arrested, and I don't think our presence is a negative thing at a liquor store or anywhere else. I used to buy alcohol in The Colony until I found out about Anna having a real liquor store. I didn't learn about this because of Anna's reputation for selling booze, but one day I was talking to a coworker who shops at Fossil Creek, and she told me about it.

What is so bad about me driving up to Anna, buying some alcohol, and then going back home to McKinney to drink it? Am I wearing out the roadway or something?

Sometimes, I don't just buy alcohol and go right home. Sometimes, I buy dinner up there. Like when we would drive to The Colony, sometimes we stop in Frisco or The Colony and spend some money there on dinner or at a store. Sometimes we need to buy gas while we are out there. More money spent.

Maybe this isn't the greatest example, but I really like Carl's Jr. They are all over the place in California, where I was born. We used to only go the the Carl's Jr. in Anna on the way to Oklahoma, which is rare.

So we were out in Plano today, and we were hungry, and we drove to Carl's Jr. in Anna for lunch ($12) and then we checked out the new liquor store grand opening, where we spent $113. We bought some wine and Christmas presents, so the bill was a little higher than normal. Earlier this week, I spent $30 at Fossil Creek.

So this week I spent $155 in Anna. I didn't drink a drop of liquor in Anna. I spent extra money in Anna supporting a non-alcohol related business. People working at these establishments probably live in Anna. If someone opened a great mom and pop restaurant near one of those liquor stores, I'd be patronizing it.

If Anna wants to grow, people have to know about the city. As it is now, a lot of Collin County won't go further north than McKinney. Why would they? They don't know what is out there, as from Hwy 75 it looks like it is all rural past Hwy 380. Why would anyone go so far north? People going to Anna to buy alcohol from the nice, well kept stores, will also eat at restaurants near the stores.

By the way, those stores are impeccably clean, professionally run, and I can't imagine the management tolerating any BS at those stores, selling to underage kids, etc. Kids wouldn't even drive that far for alcohol, cheap beer is available close to home throughout Collin County.

I do some volunteer cemetery photography for genealogists so when I go up to Fossil Creek (and now Anna Fine Wine and Spirits), I often check online to see if someone needs a cemetery photo near Anna. This takes me through town and I see nice homes and I think that maybe when we move next, Anna would be a good choice.

Does Anna want to be a small rural town, or does it want growth? I think the vote will tell the answer.

Surprisingly, most people in CC, don't even know Anna sells liquor, I think.  A little advertsing would be well worth the investment.

Welcome!  You make some very valid points, but you are preaching to the choir for most of this board.

To answer your question about growth - it is a two edged sword in my opinion.  I want some growth of course, but I do not want Anna to become Frisco, The Colony or McKinney.  I would like Anna to remain a smaller town, but I would like to see enough growth for it to have a few parks and to be able to maintain the PD and FD.

Glad you are enjoying our fair city.  Thanks for joining us!

I'm sure I saw print advertising for Fossil Creek and then this week I saw a print ad for the grand opening of Anna Fine Wine and Spirits, but I can't remember where. That is why we went back so soon, to support the new store.

How can the growth be controlled (or am I getting way off topic here)? Build a better mousetrap and they will beat a path to your door, and probably break the mousetrap in the process.

I think the alcohol sales are good because city people will come up, spend the money, and then leave. It's like free money. Why would anyone go to Anna for a sex toy when you can buy those anywhere else in Collin County? Anna has something unique now, with the liquor.

McKinney, Frisco, Allen, etc. are like one big blob of population explosion (with Frisco leading the pack as far as blandness, IMO). It's mile after mile of chain restaurants, nail salons and banks, and other places created to help you part with every spare dime you make. I detest most chain restaurants (except Carl's Jr. or other reminders of the home state) and it amazes me how excited people will get when a new Bennigan's or Taco Bell opens.

My husband first bought in McKinney over 10 years ago and the changes since then have been  dramatic. Even the surroundings of our current home have changed dramatically in less than two years and some of the reasons we selected this home have already disappeared.

You can't control the growth, one can only wish.  I do feel that Anna is far enough out that it will be many years before we have too much to worry about.  I hope, hope, hope.  I would at least like my kids to be out of high school before Anna is too much bigger -  that gives me 5 years, I think that is doable :)

Well there is no way around growth. Commercial developers have secured land all over Anna and are poised to begin to develop it and bring retail and light industrial growth. As far as a sit down restaurant the end of the bldg next to Fossil Creek already had a lease and was set for a national chain to come in along with several in the Brookshire’s development until our clear thinking friends at Annarepealalcohol so carefully thought about OUR needs. I just Love it when I am told what is best for me by other people who are looking out for my best interest. Wait If I remember correctly that is what I spent 4 years in the Army helping defend was peoples free choice.

This alcohol that you speak of is an oddity indeed.  Those who claim to be clean, do evil to rid us of it, and misrepresent themselves.  Those who enjoy it in moderation fight cleanly but passionatly to keep it.  Is a puzzlement.

The Minister is most perceptive. Wise, wise, Minister.

Can you tell me why there is not a smilie with a beer, wine or even a small martini?

Lampshadehat,  You are not wise to take the stance of evil.  The "Church" speaks against this.  It is obvious to what plain you have your eyes gazing upon.
