Hiya!
This is my first post, I found this site today. because of my interest in the alcohol sales vote.
I don't understand why the alcohol sales are supposed to be so evil. Is it because alcohol is inherently evil?
First of all, Fossil Creek and now the new store, Anna Fine Wine and Spirits, are located next to the highway. The effect on homes is minimal, I don't see any homes near these liquor stores. I would rather live next to a liquor store than a truck stop (although I don't have a problem with truck stops, they just aren't pretty). People buying alcohol aren't cruising through the subdivisions.
I live in McKinney and I am 42, and my husband is 37, neither of us has ever been arrested, and I don't think our presence is a negative thing at a liquor store or anywhere else. I used to buy alcohol in The Colony until I found out about Anna having a real liquor store. I didn't learn about this because of Anna's reputation for selling booze, but one day I was talking to a coworker who shops at Fossil Creek, and she told me about it.
What is so bad about me driving up to Anna, buying some alcohol, and then going back home to McKinney to drink it? Am I wearing out the roadway or something?
Sometimes, I don't just buy alcohol and go right home. Sometimes, I buy dinner up there. Like when we would drive to The Colony, sometimes we stop in Frisco or The Colony and spend some money there on dinner or at a store. Sometimes we need to buy gas while we are out there. More money spent.
Maybe this isn't the greatest example, but I really like Carl's Jr. They are all over the place in California, where I was born. We used to only go the the Carl's Jr. in Anna on the way to Oklahoma, which is rare.
So we were out in Plano today, and we were hungry, and we drove to Carl's Jr. in Anna for lunch ($12) and then we checked out the new liquor store grand opening, where we spent $113. We bought some wine and Christmas presents, so the bill was a little higher than normal. Earlier this week, I spent $30 at Fossil Creek.
So this week I spent $155 in Anna. I didn't drink a drop of liquor in Anna. I spent extra money in Anna supporting a non-alcohol related business. People working at these establishments probably live in Anna. If someone opened a great mom and pop restaurant near one of those liquor stores, I'd be patronizing it.
If Anna wants to grow, people have to know about the city. As it is now, a lot of Collin County won't go further north than McKinney. Why would they? They don't know what is out there, as from Hwy 75 it looks like it is all rural past Hwy 380. Why would anyone go so far north? People going to Anna to buy alcohol from the nice, well kept stores, will also eat at restaurants near the stores.
By the way, those stores are impeccably clean, professionally run, and I can't imagine the management tolerating any BS at those stores, selling to underage kids, etc. Kids wouldn't even drive that far for alcohol, cheap beer is available close to home throughout Collin County.
I do some volunteer cemetery photography for genealogists so when I go up to Fossil Creek (and now Anna Fine Wine and Spirits), I often check online to see if someone needs a cemetery photo near Anna. This takes me through town and I see nice homes and I think that maybe when we move next, Anna would be a good choice.
Does Anna want to be a small rural town, or does it want growth? I think the vote will tell the answer.
