$500 GCEC Monthly Bill - Help us solve the mystery....
« on: February 13, 2008, 12:47:05 PM »
In January we flipped because the GCEC bill was $460.  So, we turned the thermostats down, put on sweatshirts, and switched all the bulbs to those energy efficient ones.

In February the bill is $501.  :o

What is the deal?  We have 2745 sqft 2 story house built by David Weekley.  All electric in The Falls.

What is your bill and strategy?

Daisy,

Mine went from $370 last month to $420 this month, but of course we have almost a thousand sq ft more than you.

I don't know.  Have you called GCEC and asked them if they have any hints.  I would maybe call an electrician too (like the one in your service manual, you all haven't been there two years yet, you are still under warranty!).

You haven't added any old appliances, right.  Like an old garage fridge or anything...  I am just racking my brain over here for you.

I would certainly have them check it out.  They may find that you have a meter error.

Look at lifestyle changes and other such things. Our electric cost changed after our son moved out with all of his electronic equipment.

Are you now leaving the computer on 24/7 instead of powering down. Did you add a computer for the kids or some such? A second TV or such? New security light outside the house? Other electric equipment. Those wall warts use power even if the equipment is not turned on. Each may be trivial, but added together they can make a difference.

That exact thing happened to us with TXU in Wise County and we did the exact things you did to counter it - when we called to explain, their answer was swift, simple, and devastating:

"Our rates went up."

Our FEB. bill was $455.00 and I nearly flipped too!..(the month before was about $100.00 less)...We also have GCEC.  Husband took our bill and went outside and said that next months bill will be even higher since we've already used more KW's than last month..GRRRR....My house is 2250 sq. feet and all open to the upstairs.  Very tall ceilings.  I know heat rises..so i'm trying to figure out the ceiling fans to bring the heat down.  I could not believe over the weekend....it was warmer outside then it was in my house and the heat was turning on????...I wonder if it's common for meters to fail and go haywire?...In the spring I'm getting on the average billing plan.  I don't want anymore surprises next winter.  (where's spell check on this message board?...can't find it)

Sorry, I haven't implemented the spell-check module.  At first it was because modules were very difficult to integrate with the old theme we used.  Now it's just that I assume that people who like the convenience of spell-check would already be using Firefox, which does that internally.  :)

We had one of about 400$ for the house, 2500 sq ft and then the 900sqft building was 100$. I was a little surprised, but this is our first time in this house and we have the pool. I have learned to keep the lights off and use windows during the day  ???

Our electric in December was $262.  In January it was $480.  I have no idea why the fluctuation.  But it is killing our budget.

Something has to be wrong.  I got my bill today for last month, and it was only 251.  The month before was 259.  You guys are scaring me thinking that they will be overbilling in my subdivision next month!

Maybe its that your houses are 2 stories, and ours is just a one story.  I think its around 2000 sq feet I can't remember.  However that still doesn't explain why the bill is so high unless they doubled the rates or something!

We don't keep the house super warm though, the thermostat is set for heat if it goes under 68 degrees and for the ac to kick on if it goes over 74 degrees because we like it cold!

I'm with you. My bill, which I just got, was $181. But then again, it's just me and I'm gone most of the day. And I only have a one story just under 2000 sq ft. And I keep my thermo at 72, regardless of season. :)

Well I would set the AC to 70, but everytime I do "man who turns off lights alot" as our youngest calls him goes behind me and resets it to 74.

Its funny though that it seems the ones with the huge electric bills are in one subdivision.  Do they have someone new reading the meters who doesn't really know what they are doing?  I wonder if GCEC allows you to access your old meter readings from november to see if the problem is that it was just misread?
