Anyone having problems with their Electric Bill lately?
« on: January 11, 2010, 03:52:28 PM »
Starting in August our KWH used have been nearly double and sometimes more than double over what they were last year.

We keep our thermo at 64 (we like a cool house ok) for the heat, and there is simply no way that for the past 5 months we are using TWICE as much energy as we did before.

No appliances have changed, no door was left open for 5 months, just insanely high KWH usage.

Anyone else have this happen?

Ours was really high this last month.  I haven't looked into it.  Just assumed rates went up, but maybe it was usage.  I'll inquire and let you know.

Has it been unusually cold or unusually hot lately?

This past month was very cold, and our KWH usage is getting closer to normal than the previous 4 months by far.

August, September, October, and November - we had our A/C and Heat off every chance we got.  This isn't related to temperature, something weird happened 5 months ago.

GCEC will be checking our meter some time during this week, but I am seriously doubting they will find anything.  Which will bother me more.

It was a little cool recently so I expect next month to be high, but last month was already about 50% higher than last year so I don't even want to see the next bill.

I hear you.  My heat pump fan went out the day before Christmas and I just got it replaced Friday.  Not looking forward to that one.

Okay after running my Kill a Watt tool on nearly EVERY SINGLE plug-in electronic device in our house (TV, DVR, treadmill, laptop, space heaters, printer, etc) I finally remembered that somewhere around August we changed the filters we use in the A/C unit.

We have always used 3-M but we switched from a brown wrapped filter http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10719965to a blue wrapped filter http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Filtrete/AirQualityProducts/ProductInformation/FiltreteProducts/HighAirFlowFilters/.  I believe the MERV ratings are different.

I can't imagine that a filter in our A/C unit could MORE THAN DOUBLE our KWH usage, but I'm going to buy a couple of the old one and see if the KWH usage returns to normal levels after a couple electric bills come and go...   Will update.

We got hit hard 2 years ago when the same thing happened! It was our first year with an all electric house, so we didnt know what that really meant :o

Good news.  The electric company called today, after several months of bugging them, they finally called and admitted they caught an error.

They have been charging us our neighbors electric bill and charging our neighbors our electric bill, since AUGUST!

We are getting a huge credit so we won't be paying an electric bill for several months.

The A/C filters are not the problem.  And we really do have super low electric usage.  Nice to finally know what the problem was!

I guess your neighbor has a huge bill then.. that would stink for them.

Yeah, I bet they aren't to happy about now.  I wonder if GCEC will give them a call to let them know what happened, or if they will just wait for them to call and scream.  Hopefully at the very least they will let them pay the back charges in installments, since it wasn't their fault either.

i'm going to have to check my electric bill as well.... it has seemed kinda high - unsually high even though i had the heater on for the cold days earlier this month.
My favorite sex position is the Toyota - I wont stop no matter how loud you scream!!

And I don't trust anything that bleeds for five days and doesn't die!
