Question about the heat pump - We have an all electric house, so is our heat pump electric only?

Yes, but it operates more efficiently than heating coils.

What do you look for (other than the higher bill) for problems?

We knew ours was going out because it sounded like a semi was starting its engine right outside our bedroom window.

Ours was actually a bad TXV valve that caused a pressure switch (simlar to circuit breaker) to trip.  Heat pump still works, but had no idea the switch tripped and put us on the expensive stuff.

One thing you can look for, on your thermostat on the wall, it will have a light (usually red or orange) that comes on when the "emergency heat" comes on.  The emergency heat is your electric strip heaters.  It is normal on a really cold night (below 28F or so) for this light to come on for 5 - 15 minutes as the unit is in defrost.  If you notice that light staying on for half an hour or longer and doing it every time your heat cycles on, it is probably a good idea to have your unit checked out.

Our thermostat is digital and has no lights, but it will say "Aux. Heat" when it kicks on.  Thank you for the info, now I know just what to look for!

I know this message was posted a month ago, but I have had the same thing happen to me.  I had a complete meltdown when I received December's electric bill.... immediately turned off the heat and told every one to freakin' bundle up and light a fire.  Kept the heat on 60 degrees for goodness sake (sometimes even lower) and have virtually frozen through January.  Received January's bill and its even HIGHER!!!!  I am so hopping mad.  I'm glad to see I'm not the only one.  I'm going to call GCEC and have them figure out what the deal is.  Thanks for the post.

The last two bills at my house were well over $400.00.  We also completely turned the heat off up and down.  We now live in the master bedroom with a space heater.  It's ridiculous!!!

Ours stays on 65 during the day & night upstairs and 60 during the night downstairs. Ours was high, but less than $100 more than previous months bill. The highest bill has always been in the summer, over $400.

Are you all electric with a heat pump?...I don't have a problem with our summer bill...it's the winter bills that break us.

If you have a heat pump, check to see if the outdoor unit is running when your system is blowing warm air.  If not, then you're warm air is coming from the emergency heat which is a power hog.  On our outside unit near where the tubing connects, there is a red reset button.  If you push that reset and your system comes on, you should call a heat/air shop to come take a look at it because something is causing it to trip.  I recommend Brandon's AC.

We pretty much turned the heat off this last month also - and again our bill was the same as last month.  Fred thanks for the tip on checking to see if there is a problem I will try that!
