Need a good mechanic
« on: December 22, 2011, 02:26:26 PM »
My car is dead. And I'm quite certain possessed.
We were driving home from Grand Prairie a couple of weekends ago and all of the dash lights came on and the gas gauge dropped from 1/2 to E. There was no change in performance, so we kept driving. Once we got home we turned it off and back on a couple of times with no problem. The next morning, I got in to go to work and it wouldn't start. Made the husband try, and still nothing. I called in to work and he left for work. An hour later, the horn started going off. It was like someone was in my garage laying down on it. It stopped after a few minutes. I went out later and the doors were locking and unlocking. The battery eventually died. We charged it back up, tried starting it again, still no luck.

All that said, it's been two weeks and I would really like to have my car back. Any recommendations for a mechanic who won't require I give up my non-existent first child?

My trucks dash lights and guages did that several years ago. The MPH,gas and oil gauges were dancing around. It turned out to be a bad battery. I would take the battery out and have Autozone test it. If it is not the battery, probably the computer, hopefully just the battery!

We've always gotten good service from Westdyke here in Anna. Nice, honest guy.

We ended up having it towed (Thanks, AAA membership) to Chuck's Automotive in McKinney. They did a great job, and called us everyday with an update of what they had done and were going to have to do. They ended up having to replace the computer (burnt electronics smell awful!) and the battery (hadn't been replaced since early '07). We had no problems with the amount we were charged since it was actually less than we expected.
