Okay,
I went low-end, but its all I needed. In any case, I have my wireless up and working, but it is not secure....and I have no idea how to fix that. Can anyone tell me what to do to fix that on a Windows XP machine?

You have to fix it on the router itself, not the XP box.
Usually a java-based GUI through your browser using the router's IP address. Login and browse your security settings. Choose one other than "None." When you access it through a laptop, it will prompt you for your credentials.

YES, stay away from just WEP, It is the weakest WIFI encryption out there, 5 minutes with a packet sniffer and a few other little tools and anyone can get your password. Of course there is no 100% safe encryption....
