are parents crazy?
« on: March 11, 2011, 05:25:12 PM »
I just drove from the south end of Oak hollow to 455. There are kids everywhere in the streets playing, running out from behind the 3000 parked cars and monster trucks on the street. The speed limit is 25, but I went about 10 because I can't trust that some child won't bolt out into the street, then it'll be my fault if I hit him. Dogs run free too. STUPID PEOPLE, WATCH YOUR KIDS! If I played in the street when I was a kid my dad would whoop my ass.
It's gonna take a child death before anyone cares.

Before I had children of my own it was obvious to me that kids in the street killed kids and nothing else.  I personally NEVER hit a child that was playing in its own yard.

But we live in an imperfect world, and once I had my own, I realized how moronic I was to think so irrationally selfish.  Nowadays, I drive 15mph in every subdivision.  Even the ones with Monster Trucks in them.

We have a deadend on both ends of our street and the only street in is almost directly in front of our house.. So the neighbors and I sit out in the drive or on the sidewalk and let the kids play (ride bikes, kick/throw a ball, whatever) in the street a lot.. We just holler "car" or "game off" when we see a car coming down the only road into the division and all the kids move towards the sidewalk.

Something about that statement just made me laugh.  Thanks CAB.  :)

If you are in a subdivision with no park, and there are several kids near the same age group within several houses, the street is the simplest play area.  It's all I did growing up.  A single football could keep us going for an entire Saturday practically dawn to dusk.  Bikes and Baseball too.  We of course always watched for cars, and we as KIDS were aware of the danger.  Speed bumps don't fix anything permanently, because people just race between each one like it's a timed event and they try and go around one side or the other to keep 2 tires from hitting it so they can go that much faster over the bump.  Emergency responders (as I understand it) have a tough time with speed bumps as well.

I think the biggest problem we have today, as far as this topic goes, is unaware DRIVERS.  So many times on Saturday (we see it all the time), we saw vehicles slowly leave their lane and drift slightly into the next.  Even had one SUV do that for a brief moment into our oncoming lane on 455.  What were they all doing?  Looking straight down at their phones.  Most with family or friends in their own cars!  Not to mention the hyper speed pace we all seem to get caught up in.  So if we're not racing from place to place we can't seem to get everything done.

I regularly have 40mph folks in front of our house every single day.  If Anna PD wants to curb some danger and make some ticket revenue, PM me and I will let you know my exact location.  I believe the speed limit is 15mph and there are TONS of kids in the streets here when the weather is good.

Oak Hollow speed limit is 25.  I enter/exit down that street all the time.  Yeah, I get annoyed by a kid not moving occasionally, but it's the mix loads of people parked on the curb + kids + a corner (which with all the cars is difficult at best with on coming traffic).  If people would park in their driveways or maybe even in their garage (*gasp*), it would be less of an issue.

My car handles being rained on much better than my table saw does.

Mine too.  But, I manage to park both cars in most of the time.  But it really wasn't the garage that sparked this comment, I was just ad-libbing a bit.  Parking around the corner, on the curb, on both sides of the road on that street is very common.  It's hard to see.  Its impossible with two way traffic.  School buses and fire trucks can sometimes not make the corner.  It's obviously a great place for kids to play...  ;)

Small, you are such a chuckle butt! Don't you know that garages in Oak Hollow are for sofas and big screen tvs? Beer parties on Friday nights? Driveways are for the BROKEN DOWN cars of the household. That results in the street as being the only place left to park the working cars of the house, the 1992 Ford F150s and rusted out Honda Accords.

Ok, well to be more specific, my cast iron contractor table saw, bandsaw, drill presses, router table, lumber racks, workbenches, air compressor, planer, etc are more vulnerable to rain than my cars. :)

Holy moly, you are a real man, drax. What do you do, make furniture? Cabinets? I've got tools up the wazoo and 90% I've never used, but they make me feel good.

Mostly I make furniture for my house.  My ultimate goal is to replace every piece of particleboard or MDF in the house with real wood furniture. :)

Making sawdust is my version of a zen garden.

My F150 won't fit in my garage.. unless I were to get out and push the side mirrors in everytime, then I still don't have much room.. but I'm not going to do that anyway..

Making sawdust is my version of a zen garden.

Reminds me of a prank gift exchange we did one Christmas.  My cousin brought a ziploc full of sawdust and a small bottle of Elmer's wood glue.  Labeled it a jigsaw puzzle...
