Before and after school pick-up/drop-off options
« on: August 08, 2011, 11:46:26 AM »
We recently found out after purchasing in this subdivision that there are no buses running through Oak Hollow and I was curious as to what options are in place today to help families where both parents currently work.  My husband leaves very early and doesn't get back home most days until after 5pm.  I am going to be accepting children at 6:30am for my in-home daycare and allow people as late as 6pm to pick them up.

That all being said, both of us are unable to drop off or pick up our 5-year old daughter that is starting Kindergarten this year.  The school told us that many familes work together to get all kiddos safely to and from school so I simply wanted to check and see if there was a community solution to this problem.  Any help would be greatly appreciated so please let me know if anyone is willing to assist here.

Thank you very much in advance!

There are buses that run through Oak Hollow, just not for Sue Rattan Elementary. The middle & high school pick up & drop off.

The school is so close the kids can walk to it.  Isn't that why there is no bus service?
If it oinks or moos, it bar-b-ques.

Yes. There is always a sea of kids & parents walking down the sidewalks in the morning & afternoons. There are also those who like to cut it close and speed down Post Oak at break neck speeds. I'm not really fond of those people.

maybe one of your tot's parents will be willing to drive your daughter to Rattan for you? i would imagine there to be one or two of them heading that way anyway to drop off their other kiddos. you are keeping their kid safe, might be neighborly of them to offer to take yours to school.

we let our oldest walk/bike to school but no way am I as comfortable as those parents letting their Kindergarden/1st graders walk.

Unfortunately it is Sue Rattan Elementary where my daughter will be attending.  Their feedback that the school gave us is that she is close enough to walk; however, I find it very difficult to send a 5 year old on a 1-mile hike every morning before school and every morning after school.  That is just not appropriate - especially considering the lack of sidewalks all the way out where we live on Cottonwood Trail.

Yeah, we considered asking, but obviously you don't want to impose on anyone (plus we aren't positive the daycare will be open prior to school starting - still waiting on all of the paperwork).  I thought that if there was already an existing service where 1 or 2 parents shuttle their kids and other kids needing this service to and from school that we would want to look into that first.  We would be willing to pay a fair amount for fuel/time but I just didn't know what was available currently so I thought I would ask.

You're not thinking dynamically.  I *think* the city is encouraging us to start arming our 5-year-olds.

Amen to that!  Hopefully something comes up between now and the start of school as I am fairly certain a 5-year old is unable to qualify for a concealed handgun license.  :)

Well, as combat ready as you can be in a country that only allows the criminals to have guns.  But you can bet I didn't sleep naked last night in case I woke up to the smell of smoke!

You can't pack heat there?  The L and I will likely be acquiring a couple smaller pieces soon simply for fear of stricter regulations in the future.

Nope, the cops don't even get to carry guns.  They can only render you utterly dazed with their accents are you try to figure out what they heck you are even in trouble for.

Just loudly exclaim "G'day mate!" and walk away.
