Tree in front yard?
« on: March 19, 2010, 07:16:34 AM »
Does anyone know off-hand if we are required to have some kind of oak tree in the front yard?

It seems like I heard that from somebody, but don't know if that's official HOA law or not. Figured I'd ask here before calling the lovely Dawn @ essex.
There comes a time in the day that no matter the question, the answer is wine.

It's also required by City Ordinance

Our builder's crew did not plant the root ball deep enough, so our backyard tree died last year. It has been removed, and no one has complained. The tree in the front yard may not make it another year.

I believe it can be any tree you want in the front yard.  I see alot of Dogwoods.  You don't have to have a tree in the backyard.  The builders never put one in. The argument for that would be what happens if I want to put in a swimming pool.

We had a oak tree die in the front the first year we were here.  I asked our builder to put a Bradford Pear in it's place.  He said they prefer to plant Oak Trees since they live longer?  I don't know...but I see a bunch of people with Bradford Pears in my neighborhood.  This Oak we have now appears to be struggling too..If it dies..I'll replace it myself with what I want and it won't be another Oak Tree  ;D

The problem with Bradford Pears is that while they grow fast the grass under them will die, and about 10 years down the road they will split and you will be left with either a lopsided tree or you will have to pull the entire thing out.  I personally love them, but not for my front yard...

Bradford Pear trees do not live as long as Oak trees. What kind of Oak tree do you have? We have a Red Oak and it looks great. It is taller than our house ( 2 stories). Alot of people around here have a mix of Live Oaks and Red Oaks. Oak trees tend to live 30 to 60 years and even longer. The bradford pears tend to live 15 to 20 if you're lucky. They do look nice, but if you plan on living in your house for awhile, I would choose a tree that lives longer. Red Oaks are fast growers as are the bradford pears. The live oaks are slower and they don't lose their leaves in the winter like the red oaks. They will loose there leaves in early spring but they come right back. It will never be without leaves. Do not plant willows or crype myrtles too close to your foundation. The roots get big and can mess with your foundation. We have gotten some acorns from our red oak and I have gotten them to produce a tap root. I have planted them in containers and am planning on planting them when they get bigger.

Did the builder call the neighborhood Oak Hollow due to planting Oak trees in the front yard?

Thanks for the info about the crepe myrtles. Our builder planted one right up against the front corner of our house... awesome.

Per HOA you are required to have one tree in the front (no requirement for the back).  No type is specificed.  My builder place tree is a Bradford.

I'm going hybrid poplar in the back yard...

If we decide to stay in our house for the long haul (until our daughter graduates at least), then I'm thinking of having the live oak in my front yard moved to the back before it gets too big, then replacing with a pair of red oaks. I LOVE redo oaks and they do grow faster. Also, if you want fast shade, look up fast growing hybrids on the web. This might be an option I'm going to explore.

I had a tree die in my backyard, and was told by the builder that i let it die. I dug it up only to find the tree still in the plastic container.
I took a photo and emailed their office and found a crew planting a new tree in my backyard the very next day.  Low and behold that tree died too.. After thinking that I have a black thumb I dug this tree out and found that my whole back yard is solid rock.
I am happy to say I now have a nice pond in my yard where my 2 trees came to die.
