utilities for move in
« on: June 27, 2010, 02:36:27 PM »
we're moving into Oak Hollow in late July. Maddening search on the Internet to find: electric, cable, hi speed Internet. If you google you get Att and Verizon, then when you go to their sites they say they don't service your area.  We have att phone and hi speed now and satellite tv. Think we want to go to cable tv and hi speed.
We have GCEC now and like them for electricity. Do they service there?
thanks, future neighbors!

electric is GCEC
TV is either Suddenlink cable or one of the satellite providers.
Internet is Suddenlink, or maybe AT&T DSL.
If it oinks or moos, it bar-b-ques.

Internet is only suddenlink or gcec telecom. I just tried to switch to ATT, but you're right, they don't service our neighborhood.

What would really be cool is if somebody would put together a google map type application/website that allowed you to pull up an area and see what all services are available with links to their websites, ets.  This sounds like a job for the mayor of Slayter Creek Park.  :P

Internet GCEC telecom

LOL..  why would anyone sign up for that   ???

Lets compare value for your money:

GCEC DSL II (their highest residential tier)  $54.99 per month
---- Speed Available (downstream/upstream) --- up to 3.0 mbps / 384 kbps

GCEC DSL V (the highest business tier)  $199.00 per month
---- Speed Available (downstream/upstream) --- up to 6.0 mbps / 640 kbps

VS

Suddenlink
1.5 mbps / 256 kbps speed is $28.95per month.
10 mbps / 1 mbps speed is $38.95 per month.
15 mbps / 1.5 mbps speed is $55.00 per month.

If anyone sees value in GCEC DSL then I've also got a great service that you'll want to sign up for:  I'll shovel all the snow from your driveway every day for the fantastically low price of $500 per month.  Hurry and sign up now!!!!

LOL..  why would anyone sign up for that   ???

Uptime is sometimes more important than speed or price.

Even the fastest provider is FAIL when its not up.

I could re-write your example below with the uptimes I experienced with Suddenlink and everyone would say, "LOL. why would anyone sign up for Suddenlink ???"

Suddenlink has been up for like 2 years.  Your lack of commitment to a service provider has resulted in you shit-talking the finest internet provider in town.

Yeah, you had a bad cable or something.  Let's move past it.

Uptime is a valid reason for choosing an internet provider regardless of my own experiences and should be equally weighed with the speed and price.

The question was "why would..." and my answer remains.

I'm sorry if the empirical example caused you to lose sight of the moral; I'll attempt to be more ambiguous next time.

Having had no major issues with up-time from Suddenlink and no experience with GCEC DSL up-time, this was not part of the comparison.  The value proposition in my post was purely on price for given speed.

If it oinks or moos, it bar-b-ques.

This is like advising someone not to use Linux because you have to manually build every package by hand and often had to tweak libraries and source code to get stuff to work.  That kind of thing may have been true at one point, but if its 2010 and you're still telling people that, then you're just talking out your ass.

That was my point.

We started out with GCEC and it was awful. We now have Suddenlink and it's much better than GCEC. We started with GCEC because there was not a cable provider when we moved here. I'd recommend Suddenlink over GCEC anytime.
