HP/UX & the RX2600
« on: February 02, 2009, 09:48:23 AM »
The rx2600 has an ia64 processor codenamed Madison, branded as Itanium 2.  It has 3MB cache and runs at 1.3GHz.  My box has two.  It took me seven hours to install HP-UX 11iv3 (11.31) Data Center OE (DCOE) which combines the HP-UX 11i operating system with virtualization and high availability.  vPar & APA (auto-port aggregation) packages built right in.  I don't want to create a virtual HP/UX instance within my HP/UX box though, rather linux, though I do not know if this is yet possible.  Ubuntu & Gentoo both have ia64 (Itanium) install iso's.

The problem I'm having is that I chose 'everything' as an install selection, which literally installed everything, and everything is running.  At least that's my assumption why everything responds so sluggishly despite the machine not being under any load right now.  Also, SAM has been obsoleted in 11.31  - no more SAM.  It runs something now called SMH, SAM's replacement.  I'm sure its a fine tool if you're into GUI's, but I may never know since it takes so long to launch on this box.  I may soon re-install DCOE with a much more critical eye to installed apps, in hopes of getting the box quick again.

Wish me luck.

Huh???

I never did quite get the hang of "geek speak".
I am sarcastic and have a smart ass attitude.  It's a natural defense against drama, bullshit, and stupidity...

His server  - RX2600 which is made by HP(Hewlett Packard) runs a proprietary implementation of the Unix operating system(HP-UX 11iv3). He loaded everything in the OS package and it is running slow. He is going to attempt a reinstall selecting the individual applications so the system does not use some many resources. E can fill in the rest in layman's terms if he want too.

These types of conversations are exactly why I am married.  I usually just whine/nag long enough and ~j will say something to the effect of "Give me that damn thing!!!" and take it and fix it for me.  ;)  That is how I got my recent memory upgrade (in my computer, I wish it was that easy for my real memory, it definitely needs an upgrade too).
