Linux on SPARC
« on: September 21, 2007, 09:05:54 AM »
I've successfully installed  Ubuntu on a Sun Microsystems Ultra-10 and would like to detail the steps for anyone else interested.

First of all, you'll need an iso from http://ubuntu.com.  There are several to choose from, so make sure you select the (sparc) image.  Its under the ubuntu-server link.  Ensure you don't have a Raptor GFX (TSI) framebuffer in your machine, even if you're not using it at the primary output device, because ubuntu will no install with it present in the system.

Installation is straight-forward and without issue.

Because you've installed the server version, IF you're going to run this as a workstation, you'll need to install a GUI.

Start with X binaries:

sudo apt-get install xorg

Then your desktop manager/window manager of choice, and you're done!

Eric, you & my hubby are gonna get along REALLY well. I will probably spend many a conversation just singing to myself, "All together now ----- meow, meow, meow,meow....meow, meow, meow, meow...meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow..."
Ask me how I can help you feel your best.

The toughest install I had to go through was on an SGI Challenge S.  It's basically a stripped Indy with no head, so everything had to go through the serial console.  Bad part was if the serial port ever became unplugged, or the computer running the serial port turned off, the Challenge would turn off.  This was a hardware power down, so fsck ran each time it powered up.

What you lack in technobabble you more than make up for in compassion.  I see my own lack of empathy as a shortcoming.  All I see in you, sir, are strengths.

I honestly don't have a clue how to respond to this, I am speechless........

I guess.....Thank You!  I would not consider myself a compassionate person but I am glad that other people see me that way and consider it a strength  :)
